I’m sure, like anyone else, you love a good event, don’t you? There’s nothing quite like gathering together with friends and work colleagues to celebrate your achievements over the past year, as well as catching up with people you might not get to see that often. As a photographer, I love to capture these events because they’re part celebration, part reunion and part teaching new things. But I honestly don’t understand why event photography has to look so corporate and boring!
I shot my first event last year at the Blue Light International Women’s Day conference held jointly by Essex and Kent’s emergency services. Despite the fact I was busy working to capture the event, I couldn’t help but be swept up in the celebration and excitement of the day too, which I think came across in my photographs.
In fact, I know it did. Because when Mandy contacted me about photographing the 2018 British Association for Women in Policing (BAWP) awards later that same year, she told me she loved how I’d captured that event and how I’d worked on the day. I was definitely honoured and thrilled to be able to capture this event for the women within the police force.
I honestly could not have anticipated what kind of an event it would be. Yes, it was largely about celebration, reunion and education. But it was also so much more than that. Seeing and hearing the amazing stories of those police officers, learning a little bit of the experiences they have gone through, was really powerful. I felt a few lumps in my throat that day and had to wipe away a few tears!
But enough about me. This was about those amazing police officers. So, yes it’s a little late but it’s worth showing you some images from such a great day.
And thank you to the BAWP for allowing me to come in and capture this awesome event!
